The construction of the Mumbai Suburban Railway began after the British East India Company built the first passenger railways.

On 16 April 1853, the first major train was built between Bor Bunder and Thane, covering a total distance of 34 km in 57 minutes and is thus the oldest train network in India.

However, the first EMU service was started on 3 February 1925 from the Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) to Coorla Harbour (now Kurla).
